12k to 13k

Post by leitzn »

My wife, dog and I will be staying in Fraser for 2 weeks in July and would like to know of any class 1 - 2 hikes close by(within an hour). Does anyone have any suggestions where to find a good outdoor shop in the area where we could purchase maps and get info? Thanks to all those who support 14ers.com.

Colorado Mines Peak and/or Mt. Flora from Berthoud Pass meet your criteria.

Several opportunities for nice hikes in that area.
Not sure what distance you're looking for.
Some ideas:
Byers Peak - 12K, short hike 3 mi r/t - approx 2400 ft elev gain - nice views
James Peak, Mt Bancroft, Parry Peak, Mt Eva - all 13K - from Rogers Pass Trailhead or you can access these peaks from Berthoud Pass (that's the closest access to Colorado Mines Peak and Mt Flora as mentioned above).
One of my favorites in this area, particularly in July, is St Louis Lake. The wildflowers are dazzling mid-late July here. It's a 7 mi hike r/t to 11,500 ft (if the road to the trailhead is open), if you want, you can continue on to St Louis Peak - 12K elev for even better views. There has been some logging in the area due to the beetle kill - you might want to check out http://www.headwaterstrails.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, or call 970-887-1174 for more info on any road/trail closures.
The Sulphur Ranger District/Arapahoe Nat'l Forest 970-887-4100, http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/arnf/about/orga ... ndex.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - may be helpful.
There may be better contact sources, but at least it's a starting point.
There's Fairview Mtn north of Granby in the Never Summer wilderness or more options on the west side of RMNP.
Or if you would enjoy a non-peak experience, check out Cascade Falls (roaring this time of year) in the Indian Peaks Wilderness
The older you get, the better you get, unless you're a banana.
