Bald Mountain in winter?

Post by hobo13 »

A buddy and I are headed out on Sunday. Good winter experience, but no avy training, hence we want to minimize or eliminate potential avy slopes.

I looked at Bald mountain on Bill's BreckClimbing site. Seems like the upper portions of the route follow a ridge, and ought to have minimal avy risk. What about getting to the ridge? The region with the switchbacks, if snowcovered, seems like it could be sketchy. Is there a better way around this?

Other suggestions for a 13er in the area?

If you have acess to 14erworld, a TR was put up last week. The climber followed the same route that I followed on my winter trip in the mid 90s. He hiked up French Creek toward Frenchman pass, then turned to climb back toward the summit. He descended the ridge to the north to which you refer. On stable snow (which you are likely to have if you leave early in the day to avoid afeternoon wet slab avy, the rout eis relatively safe if you stick to ridges.
However, I remmember two experienced locals getting in trouble on that mountain skiing from the summit in early winter in the mid 90s. I think i remember at least one death.
