Trip Mar 26-28th, Leadville Area-Experienced Trekkers Wanted

Postby drock » Wed Mar 20, 2013 1:58 pm

Hi,

March 26th-28th a friend and I are planning to do Mt. Elbert, Mt. Democrat et. al. and another peak TBD. I think it'd be awesome (and safer) to meet up with some experienced folks. We'll have a 4-wheel SUV with room for 2-3 to make it as far to the THs as possible.

My friend is an Ultraman triathlete from Orlando and I'm an Ironman triathlete living in Vail. We are both fit and accounting for time to acclimate. I've done 14ers in the summer. I've been training to do a big week of 14ers this winter. We both have the right gear (snowshoes, crampons, ice axe, avi kit, GPS beacon, etc.), The only thing that bothers me is I could not get into the March AIARE class here in Vail, so the only avalanche prep I will have is a book I'm reading and the practice area up at Two Elks. I'd feel a lot better having experienced folks join us.

We're trying to pick peaks that have no or minimal avalanche danger and a reasonably accessible path to the TH. Here is the current game plan:

Hike Day 1 (Highest Peak)

Hike Day 2 (Three Peaks In One Day)
Latest trip report: http://14ers.com/php14ers/tripreport.php?trip=13349&parmpeak=Mt.+Democrat&cpgm=tripmain&ski=Include

Hike Day 3
TBD

Ideas:
Bierstadt. I have done this one… no trip reports though. We’d have to be sure roads are accessible. We can leave from Vail to do this one.

Are you looking to do a regular hike up these peaks, or do something more like a trail run (or however close you can, given the conditions)?
