Welcome Spring mini-gathering March 30

Postby Scott P » Wed Mar 13, 2013 8:18 am

Anyone interesting in climbing Lackawanna Peak March 30th? Not looking to make it into a huge event, but a "mini-gathering".

The route will be the south slopes/spur. I also have Friday off as well.

I'd definitely be interested. I'll shoot you a PM.

This has potential for me too.

Sounds like people are interested. We'll look at the weather and decide the best time to meet.

PS, does anyone else have Friday off?

We are considering joining for this, depending on the weather. We have Friday off, and I could be convinced for a Friday peak attempt (depending on the peak, I might be able to convince Ben as well). What did you have in mind?

Don't know yet, but open to ideas. Bull Hill is close by, but I'd be up for anything.

I'd be interested in a Bull Hill attempt on Friday, depending on the snow and weather conditions.

Anyone interested in carpooling? I am in Parker. I am off on Friday as well. So far the forecast looks promising!

There are two variations of the route on the south side of Lackawanna Peak. One goes up the snowgully and one up the spur.

From the information I gather:

The snowgully is easier (but requires and ice axe) and much more pleasant, but it is riskier for avalanches.

The spur usually has very little avalanche danger, but in places it a tedious pain in the butt with bushwhacking and talus.

Looking at the weather forecast, there is an excellent chance that the snowgully is going to be stable. What time we start won't matter much if we take the spur variation, but climbing the snowgully would require an early start.

I'm planning on checking the snowgully route Friday and to me it sounds like the better bet if conditions are stable.

Does that sound OK with everyone? If so, a ~5:30 am start would be preferable.

Arghh, going to be out of town this weekend. Will appreciate any info on Laka's snow gully route. Have fun and be safe.
