Need a climbing partner? Trying to form a hiking group for an outing?

Up the Loft and Down the Keyhole of Long's (9/23)?

Postby siouxbird » Wed Sep 19, 2012 8:50 pm

Was hoping to get in my 14th 14er of the year by going up the Loft route and down the Keyhole route of Long's. No climbing partner as of yet. Sunday is preferred, but I could be persuaded to miss college football and go Saturday. Weather looks great for both days. Probably shoot for a start at 6 at the latest, I'm thinking.

Been to the Keyhole 5 times. Never the loft.

I am from very near Sioux City, though, the name comes from graduating as a Fighting Sioux from North Dakota.

I highly recommend going up the loft route. It's not really any more technical than the standard route and there's way less traffic, if any, on that route. I've done it both times that way and couldn't see going "the other way" if I were to do it a third time.

The only thing to watch for if you go early, and you should, is ice forming on the exit ramp and a couple other areas from there to the saddle. Snow pack was pretty minimal this year so it might not be an issue.

The exit ledges were pretty icy last weekend (9/15). There were enough small rocks poking through the ice to maintain control, but I put the microspikes on for the last 50 feet of ice just to play it safe.

Thank you for the conditions update! A little ice is my main worry.

I did end up going. I went with two others that were fairly experienced, including an 11 year-old boy. We met a few people on the loft before heading to Meeker?
