New online national forest maps, trail mileages, road info

Postby Jelf » Sun Oct 20, 2013 6:52 pm

These online maps are now ready for almost all of the national forests in California, Oregon and Washington. Here are the links:
http://www.mappingsupport.com/p/gmap4_usfs_maps.html

Please read the Tips.
There is a link to the tips in the upper left corner of each map.

To the best of my knowledge these are the only free online maps that show trail mileages without making you click anything.

They are also the only online maps that let you see the forest service roads that are open and roads that are closed by toggling those layers on and off.

Do you know when such maps will be available for National Forests in Colorado?

As soon as I produce the data files for the national forests in CO. Fortunately I have now developed code that greatly automates that process. I plan to get the CO maps done and links posted within a couple of weeks. I do this in my spare time and that can vary day by day.

I also need to talk to some forest service staff and gets some things clarified in my mind about how they manage and update their data.

I'll be the first to say that this is awesome. I am looking forward to seeing the Colorado map, and will definitely use these others if I find myself in the area of these trails.

Nicely done. =D>

Thanks for the kind words.

I talked to the forest service yesterday and I will be getting a fresh data dump from them. Thus when I do maps for the national forests in CO, I will have their latest data.

They are also starting a big push to complete, cleanup and GIS-ify their data. My goal is to produce code that will automatically run once a week or so and update my maps with their latest info.
