I was seeing what works best for letting your dog drink while hiking. What do you all recommend that they can drink out of easily, without having to waste left over water or take up extra space and weighing much.
I have been squirting water out of my camel back and my pup drinks it like that, but it wastes quite a bit of water.
Thanks

Plenty of places sell collapsible dog bowls that don't weigh much. The main we one we use probably weighs an ounce or two at most.

^^^ +1.
Wasting water is inevitable. To prevent wasting too much, give them a little bit of water at a time, let them finish it first, before giving them more. Also, have them carry their own water.

I've been using a pupcup b/c it fits on my nalgene. It's super convenient and can squish into a pocket when I don't have my nalgene. I use it for everything - hiking, trail running, 14ers. It's also grippy so my dogs aren't knocking it over as much.

I fold this rubbery one up and shove it in my pack. Easy enough to work with and super light.

Re: Doggie Water Container?
Worth mentioning that dogs CAN also get Giardia from drinking untreated water. Fun for neither the pooch nor custodian.
Found one these on Sneffels. Drinking tray conforms to side of bottle and can be poured back. Any dedicated sports drink bottle and collapsible bowl could serve the same.

Out of all the dog bottles I've had, this is my favorite. Doesn't leak and the water they don't drink pours right back into the bottle.

Re: Doggie Water Container?
I have a soft canvas type bowl I use for my dog. It folds up and fits well in the pack. Not exactly sure where I got it. I carry an extra small water bottle for him and when he is done I pour what is left in the bowl back into "his" bottle so as not to waste any water. Anytime we pass a creek I keep his smaller bottle filled up.

Re: Doggie Water Container?
I typically share part of my water with my dog so I don't have to carry a separate container for him. I have trained him to drink water out of my Osprey bladder when I squirt it for him. This works well when we're on the go, and I bring a foldable nylon bowl to fill for him (similar to the Ruff Wear one mentioned above) for when we stop for a break, lunch, or on the summit.
Of course he also drinks from streams and on occasion from muddy holes (although I try not to let him do that too much). I've heard that giardia is a risk in the mountains for dogs but have never had one get sick in almost 30 years of hiking/backpacking with them. I figure any animal species that can eat dead things and feces on a regular basis and be okay is probably going to have a higher immunity to those types of bugs. LOL
