Canon announces new mirrorless camera

Postby Dancesatmoonrise » Mon Jul 23, 2012 8:45 am

The Canon EOS M ships in October. It's Canon's much-anticipated first mirrorless camera.
The unit with a 22mm (35mm equiv) f/2 prime lens will weigh about 14 oz with battery and lens.
A possible issue may be slow autofocus. See review below. A 35-88 (equiv) zoom is also available in the M format, and an adapter is available allowing full function of EF and EF-S lenses.

BTW, the Imaging Resource reviews have been very helpful. This one is a hands-on preview, but not a full review, which will be forthcoming when the unit becomes available.

Looks cool, the AF lag is unacceptable though. Hopefully that gets worked out before release, I'd love to be able to drop some weight but keep the quality.

Mirrorless technology has been around for a while in the Micro 4/3 system. They are not quite as small as this guys appears to be but they are far smaller than a standard SLR and many weight less than this Cannon does. There are also no AF delays.

I'm excited about this camera (since I own a bunch of Canon lenses), but just a quick correction: that 22mm is not the 35mm full-frame equivalent, it really is a 22mm lens, meaning about 35mm focal length equivalent on a full frame. Still, a very usable prime lens. If they were to at least plan to make a very wide prime (Like a 11-12mm or so (18mm equiv)), I'd probably buy this camera.

Wow, I just read some of the specs, and I can't wait to see what this camera can do! I have some nice lenses, like an EF 100-400mm IS, that would be killer to be able to use with a more compact camera for everyday use. Now if only Canon would make a powerful zoom telephoto lens that doesn't weigh 6 pounds... Hiking with that lens is quite the chore.

I have and like this Canon 70-30mm lens:

Only 22 ounces. Not quite your 100-400, but about a fourth of the weight.
