Canon S100 due out Nov 2011

Postby Dancesatmoonrise » Tue Sep 20, 2011 10:46 pm

The new Canon S100 is the latest in the series following the S90 and S95.

Changes include going from 10 to 12 MP, a CMOS vs. the CCD sensor in the older models, ISO 6400 vs. the previous 3200 maximum, and the new Digic 5 processor which is said to do a better job of noise reduction.

Availablity in November. Probably worth waiting for from what I can tell. Here's an overview from Image Resource:

I am not a photo buff but I have a Nikon Coolpix S9100 that is so automatic that I can't take soft waterfall and creek images with it. Will this Canon do this? Thanks in advance for a reply.

Yeah, this S100 looks great. I almost pulled the trigger on an S95 (my GF has the S90). One other major improvement is the 24mm equivalent wide angle (vs. 28mm on the S90/95). 24mm wide is significantly better for landscape photos, IMHO.

This whole line of P&S's is excellent. See "dpreview" for details on the new S100.

And yes, lots of manual capabilities on these cameras (including full manual exposure, long long exposures for cool waterfall effects). Better than most P&S's.

Just curious why the S95 costs so much more than the PowerShot ELPH 300HS? I would assume that a new version of the PowerShot ELPH 300 HS will be coming out soon with the Digic 5 processor.

Very appealing, really like the 24mm equiv. and higher ISO (wonder how noisy it is at 6400 though). I'm constantly torn between an indestructable and a nice P&S. Wish they could combine the two.

Just looking quickly:

1) Faster lens
2) Aperture Priority / Shutter Priority / Manual
3) Bigger sensor
4) Bigger screen
5) RAW image support
6) More powerful flash

I'm sure there are a few more things too. Those features are important to some people. Others wouldn't miss them at all. The S100 looks very nice. I might be tempted. My Panasonic has been acting up recently.

I like my S95, but the #1 thing I'd want different is a wider angle. The S100 with 24mm vs 28mm sounds wonderful! Man, I'm really tempted to upgrade.

I'm tempted to upgrade from the S90... I would jump if they'd increase the optical zoom! [-o< 3X is barely worth trying sometimes.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted. Wasn't listed in the cheat sheet cliffs note version above   Now I am seriously tempted! Wondering how quick the price will drop.... usually a few months.

The S-series are far superior cameras to the ELPH series, which are pretty basic point-and-shoot cameras. The S-series are compact digitals that perform likes DSLR's, with pretty much all the features a serious amateur would need without the bulk. I love my S90, I think an upgrade to the S100 is in order. :)

One thing that makes me nervous about the S100 is the sensor; CMOS vs. a true CCD. Plus it went from 10MP to 12MP. More pixels in the same size sensor means smaller pixels and all else being the same, more noise.

The real beauty of the S90/95 IMHO is the crystal clear image, minimal noise even at higher ISO's. This is primarily because the sensor is significantly larger then, say, the ELPH series, and generally larger than all other P&S's (though there are some P&S's now that have APSC size sensors). I applauded Canon for keeping the S90/95 at a "mere" 10MP, which was the perfect compromise of plenty of resolution and larger pixels (less noise).

So the question is: IS the new S100 sensor at least as good (clean) as the S90/95? I think I will wait until some actual reviews and tests come out. DPREVIEW usually does very nice testing.
