SLR Camera....Suggestions?

Postby DKELLY » Sun Jan 09, 2011 3:27 pm

I'm in the market for a fairly simple SLR Camera that is good for shooting on 14er trips. I'm sure there's a thread on this already but I couldn't find one. What kind of equipment would you suggest? I appreciate your input!

I would be interested in people's opinions as well....however, I'd also like to also ask, does anyone have suggestions on one that embeds your GPS coordinates as well?

Dunno. Haven't researched it yet. Probably less than $400.

At $400 or less, you'd be far better off with a decent P&S camera. Many P&S models now have manual controls, and have more going for them than a $400 SLR/lens combo unless we are talking about analog, in which case the options expand greatly.

Why do you want an SLR over a Point and Shoot.

From experience with a Panasonic Fz35, I would highly recommend the Fz40 update. The best value superzoom P&S.

Right now Sony has the best electronics and glass. I would check on the Alpha 390 or 580. The G glass lenses are rated the best on the planet. My sister and brother in law are pro photographers and both use Sony and in fact my brother in law just sold his Canon setup for the new Alpha 900. Any of these should compare well with the clarity, contrast, sharpness, and color of slide photos.

does anyone have suggestions on a good lightweight tripod? I have a Canon xSi, and I love getting great shots but not a fan of a bunch of heavy equipment. :)

Manfrotto makes good tripods. Not cheap though.

+1. Carbon fiber series. With a ball head.
