Where to stay in Durango before the train ride

Postby mdavenport2 » Thu Aug 30, 2012 2:06 pm

Anyone have any suggestions on where to car camp in or around Durango the night before the train ride to Needleton? I can either sleep in the truck or in my tent.

Junction Creek campground. Unfortunately, the free dispersed camping above the fee camping area is no longer allowed so you'd have to pay to camp, but it's still cheaper than a motel. It's at the end of the Junction Creek Road, just past the start of the Colorado Trail. To find Junction Creek Road, just drive north on Main Street until you find Junction Creek Liquors! :-"

Durango Hometown Hostel is about 30 bucks per night if your just trying to save money. It's about 1.5 miles from the train. Very neat and clean.

The Spanish Trails Inn is about $64 a night for one bed, an extra $20 or so for a room with two beds. It's nothing fancy, but in a pinch it will do. Orbitz only seems to offer the higher priced bigger rooms, so if you only need one bed call the inn directly instead. It's about a 10 minute drive to the train station.

Agreed, it's a really clean place - host is awesome... Not your typical European stuffed-in-an-attic four floors above the single bathroom hostel. They have co-ed dorms, or male-only/female-only dorms... Really quite nice.

We stayed at the NFS campground at Lemon Reservoir. It's fairly close to Durango, and we didn't have any trouble packing up, driving to Durango, parking, and getting to the train with plenty to time to spare. Staying in town would be easier, however.

We stayed at the KOA campground, very close to Durango (10-15 min drive).

United Campground heading north out of Durango, and the train runs right through the middle of the campground in the morning and later in the day. Put pennies on the track to flatten!
