Guanella Pass Road conditions for a MINI Cooper?

Postby Marty » Thu Aug 02, 2012 3:22 pm

Hi all,

I will be traversing across Guanella Pass on Saturday and wondering if I need to take my Jeep rather than my MINI. I haven't been up there in a while - can anyone who has been up there lately give me some advice? I'd rather get the good gas mileage but not if I will spend the whole drive creeping around potholes.

Thanks!!
Marty

Paved all the way.
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

Did they pave it all down the other side? Last summer it was poor pavement and then dirt on the other side, a little washboarded. The mini would be fine, but probably not comfortable.

It's not paved all the way (as of 10 days ago), though the dirt miles on the Grant side should not a problem for a Mini Cooper. Just a little wash-boardy.

I almost always wear a bathing suit when I climb. If you see me say hey!

Didn't consider the Grant side. Georgetown side is nice though.

It's paved on the Georgetown side? When did they do this? Last time I was up there it was freshly rocked and the rocks/dirt was better then the first few miles of the pot holes in the pavement.

The Georgetown side is now a much smoother ride than most Denver streets.

Smooth as a baby's bottom all the way from Georgetown to the GP trailhead yesterday. Better than any street in Georgetown. There was a smal rockslide near the bottom but nothing that impeded traffic.

Sa-WEET!!!! I knew there was some roadwork going on up there this year, but didn't realize they repaved it from Georgetown. Many, many thanks for the responses - you all rock!
