Road closure - Handies, Sunshine and Redcloud inaccessible

Postby lakecityrat » Fri Jul 06, 2012 7:56 am

The road from Lake City to the Grizzly Gulch trailhead is closed due to rockslides. I spoke to a member of the road crew and they estimated 2-4 days to get it open. This makes Handies, Sunshine and Redcloud THs inaccessible. Contact the Sherriff's office or CDOT for updates.

Would they be accessible if you came up over Cinnamon pass?

It rained hard up here (Alpine Loop) last night. The Lake Fork is chocolate brown. All those rain dances worked -- maybe too much of a good thing all at once! SJ Ron

The slide is on the Shelf Road. You can go around from Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass to the TH or from Silverton thru Animas Forks and over Cinnamon Pass. SJ Ron

San Juan Ron is probably right. We thought about going around on Engineer and back up thought Animas Forks, but it is quite a detour. It looks like a good chance for heavy rain again today, so it might be advisable to call the Sherriff's office or the county to make sure your path is accessible. Sketchy weather for hiking 14'ers anyway.

[-( No, the shelf road (and closure) is on the Lake City side of the Alpine Loop between LC and the THs. You can still get to the AB or GG/SC THs from the west. Come over from Silverton thru Animas and over Cinnamon, south of Ouray up to near Engineer and over Cinnamon, or Lake City over Engineer and then Cinnamon. You cannot go from Lake City on CR30 over the Shelf Road to the THs. SJ Ron

Heading from Silverton up to Grouse Gulch on the 3rd and 4th of July, we had no problems. We hiked over Cinnamon Pass and saw few issues with the road save for the last mile or two before the junction at American Basin. I doubt that much has changed on that side and there should still be access even after the rains.

We just left the gate where the closure is around 8am this morning. Heard a rumor it may be open today around noon. For information this number is listed on the closure sign. Hinsdale county road dept. 970-944-2400.

Going from Lake City to the pass: instead of taking the fork right to Cinnamon, stay left and head for Cuba gulch. Take the old Boulder gulch trail across from Square gulch for Handies. I did it two years ago and the beginning had a lot of dead fall to contend with. Nice route though as there were no other people. I wrote a TR for Handies for that trip.

The road is now open, but it's extremely muddy and there were actually several slides with the largest about 1 mile from the SC/GG TH. For those of you in the Hard Rock 100 next week, expect mud, lots of mud if it keeps raining. Say "Hi" at the Sherman Stop!

SJ Ron, Do you know approximately when the first runners are expected to come though the Sherman Aid Station?
