Camping at Crags Trailhead and Pikes Peak question

Postby hatchmaster » Thu Sep 17, 2009 11:50 am

Can you camp (sleep in the car) at Crags trailhead? I have to be in the Springs Monday night so I'm thinking of trying Pikes Peak on Monday. If I drive down Sunday night can I car camp at the TH? I also heard there was a $5 fee, is this true?

Also is there water available at the summit? Do I need to filter it?

Thanks for any info.

You can camp in your car at the new trailhead any time with no problem. They don't allow you to do that in the parking lot at the end of the Campground (which is also where the $5 fee applies). However I think the campground is closed for the year now so you can't drive that far anyway (only adds 1/4 mile). Along the road before the campground there are lots of free dispersed camping sites too.

If the summit house is open there is a water fountain inside where you can refill. If it is not than the only source of water beyond Devils playground will be the snow on the ground.

Any reason the summit house would not be open on Monday?

The summit house is open from 9:00 - 3:00 late-August to late-October, also dependant on the weather. If you start out early in the morning, you may get to the summit before the summit house actually opens.
