A quote from Steve on September 22, 2010 from the thread "When I die...."
sgladbach wrote: Remembering those who have passed will do more to heighten your own awareness of potential dangers than would a critque of their errors. Remember: you've already taken courses, participated with good mentors, and read valuable books. You know what mistakes can be made. You know that you can make zero mistakes and still die. Vigilance is the best defense and bringing along the memory of those lost partners will always heighten vigilance. Sadly, none of us are 100% vigilant.

I will miss seeing that bright Orange hat and that brighter smile in the mountains, on my winter ascents... but his memory will continue to brighten my days. RIP Steve.

"Oh my God" to that picture of Aspen Mountain Rescue carrying him off of the mountain. Such horror and such beauty in a single photo.

It must be heartwrenching to post these photos, but thanks for sharing them.

Thank you for posting this, although it has made me cry. Again. I didn't know Steve personally, although I'm fairly certain we were on some of the same peaks at the same time and he was at the Fall Gathering last year (2012) and I was there as well. People come into our lives for a reason. Some to show us how to live as better people (by their positive example) and some to show us how to live as better people (by their not-so-positive example). Steve, obviously, was the former. All people we cross paths with are here to teach us something we need to know and vice versa. I hope to remember that in all of the things that I do/say. My sincere sympathy to Steve's family, friends and the mountaineering community.
