We didn't know Chris, but thought of him on our hike up Mt. Lindsey today...

Chris Gray on a beautiful December morning in 2011.
Aaron, Chris and I left Denver early that morning with Fletcher as our Primary goal. It was wonderful to talk with Chris about his love of the mountains.
Have thought of you a lot, my friend....always will.

You can touch the void, just don't fall into it.
I fly a starship across the universe divide....and when I reach the other side...I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can. Perhaps I may become a Mountain Man again.

Re: Climber Deceased On Crestone Peak
Taylor, i live in Ohio so I cannot climb for chris. However, in his memory I hiked 21 miles today on the Buckeye Trail. Lost my sign to a wind gust in a torrential downpour......but I did lay down tracks in honor of your husband. Just a soaked and sweaty 60 yr old glad to take a day of reflection and gift it to you both. It is awesome to see the 14er community wrap its arms of comfort around you. Hopefully it gives you joy to feel that bond and adds to your countless happy memories of your husband. Peace and prayers to you.axbauer wrote:Not on the top of a 14er, but with love nonetheless <3

"In this high country that we love, trails are steep. We climb each mile, breath by breath, and at the threshold of pain, bliss overtakes us."
"It's called CRAZY. And somehow, when you are bent over your poles, staring at your boots- heart heaving and trying not to cough your lung onto a rock= you look up...and you are looking down over all those beautiful mountains....and you wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
"For all the richness of normal, everyday life, it is good sometimes to trespass high in the sky, and live with uncommon intensity, experiencing something that gets close to the sublime."

Re: Climber Deceased On Crestone Peak
Hi Taylor,
I live in Wisconsin so I am unable to climb a 14er for Chris. So I hiked 10 miles of the Timm's Hill National Scenic Side Trail to Timm's Hill, the highest Point in Wisconsin at 1951'. I created an entry for Chris and Rob in the guest book. It meant alot to me that Chris responded to my request for a climbing partner. May god bless you and your family during this time.
Sincerely,
Chris Schlegel (MechE)

Re: Climber Deceased On Crestone Peak
I`m so sorry for your loss.
There are no peaks in this part of Texas but I`ll run this weekend`s 20 miler in Chris` memory.

Re: Climber Deceased On Crestone Peak
I hiked Crestone Peak and Humbolt Peak last weekend. For me the most magical experience was around 6:30 am when the sun rose through the distant eastern horizon and struck the Crestones with a warm light. Both my hiking partner and i stopped for about 10 minutes on the slopes of Humbolt overlooking the valley and witnessed a beautiful light show...at first deep pinks and then glowing to yellow. Then suddenly the sun filtered through a cloud on the horizon and the miracle of light suddenly went to the dull normalcy that we usually see mountains with. There is a magic moment and oh that we would stop to appreciate it because it is so brief and fleeting.
