Please comment on South Colony Fees!

Postby D8S » Thu Sep 16, 2010 11:17 pm

On September 29th and October 5th, 2010, several members of the Western Slope No-Fee Coalition will be meeting with the County Commissioners of the two Colorado counties most affected by the South Colony fee proposal, asking them to adopt an official position opposing the South Colony Basin fee proposal. This is your chance to voice your opinions about the fees. Sending a brief and polite message expressing your opposition to the proposed fees will go a long way towards keeping public lands accessible to all. Since these are both public meetings, you are also encouraged to attend in person. Either way, don't let your silence be interpreted as a sign of support for the fees!

Don't keep the news to yourself either. Tell everyone you know who opposes access fees to express their opinion.

Custer County meeting will be September 29, 2010 at 9 am in Westcliffe.

Send messages to the Custer County Board of County Commissioners:
Lynn Attebery, Chairman: lynn@custercountygov.com
Jim Austin: jim@custercountygov.com
Carole Custer: carole@custercountygov.com

Saguache County meeting will be October 5, 2010 at 2 pm in Saguache.

Send messages to the Saguache County Board of County Commissioners:
Sam Pace, Chairman: space@saguachecounty-co.gov
Mike Spearman: mspearman@saguachecounty-co.gov
Linda Joseph: ljoseph@saguachecounty-co.gov

You can also send your comment to the Forest Service by email to msmith05@fs.fed.us

When you send in your comments be sure to send a copy of them to your federal congressional delegation! You can find their webforms at www.senate.gov and www.house.gov.

I can't believe this is true. I understand that the peaks need money to be maintained, but this just seems bureaucratic mess.

Thanks to all who wrote letters and expressed their opposition to the fees, both Custer and Saguache Counties have sent the Forest Service back to the drawing board.

For a while it looked like there might be a public meeting between fee opponents and the Forest Service in Custer county, but after the Forest Service backed out, the commissioners drafted a letter suggesting the Forest Service go back to the drawing board and find a better way of managing the basin.

Thank you to all who wrote letters and contributed to this small victory for public lands. This may not be over yet, but it is definitely a setback to the Forest Service's proposal.

Wow - just another example of the 'power of the people.' I didn't personally join this fight, but thanks all for potentially saving me cash when I return there!

Sweet!

Let's hope this decision gets as much publicity as the proposal itself.

Is this official news that I could post in a more prominent "announcement" thread?

We don't need access fees. The way they handled it at Maroon bells is by limiting the cars but no fee. There are other solutions while controversial they don't go to the lottery step that California nows suffers from. We have permit requirements in the Holy Cross and Maroon Bells Wilderness but no fees (long pause) yet.
