Ash-ish, may not help too much, but I took this from Arkansas' summit May 11 - the NE couloir is the first gully closest in the picture. A bit of a spicey cornice drop as an entry, but the couloir was fully in below that.

Does anyone have recent pictures of the north facing couloirs (snake or northeast) on Sneffels?

Thanks jbchalk. Is north couloir the nearest with the vertical wall cornice(not overhanging)?.if so it looks fun challenge. Not sure about the safety of climbing the overhanging ones.

We did Silver Couloir today. 1-3" corn. Snirt and a bit lumpy in the lower half, skied fine but past its prime.

Arkansas north line is in in terms of coverage (go for climb) but is in poor condition for skiing due to a large natural wet slide. It would be possible to milk skiers right for relatively unspoiled turns, but know that most of the line has debris or was effected by the slide.

ash-ish wrote:Planning on climbing Dragon's Tail memorial day weekend. If the current warm weather conditions continue, it looks like the best option would be to climb very early in the morning or late in the night. Since that weekend is a full moon weekend, I am thinking of making an early start, like 3:00AM. I am a slow hiker too.

Climbed DT today and left from the bottom of the couloir about 5:30am and topped out about 7:30am. Conditions were still very good with that timetable.

Note the runnel in the first picture as mentioned previously in this thread (I think). The second picture is just above the "step". I felt that it was only about 3+ but it did have a thin layer of ice on the top so use caution. I was able to stay ahead of the sun until one of my crampons broke and I had to work with it for a while to make it functional again. Otherwise, I may have stayed ahead of it all the way. Even being in the sun some of the time, the snow was still pretty nice.

Emperor Couloir on Torreys

Postby Hoot » Mon May 27, 2013 5:55 pm

Emperor Couloir on Torreys was in great climbing shape on Sunday 26 May. We couldn't get the truck past the first creek crossing in Grizzly Gulch due to snow, but the snow was melting fast and the 4WD road may be passable by next weekend. This was my first climb of Emperor and I really enjoyed it, all 3000+ feet!
