angel of Shavano 4/11

Postby moneymike » Wed Apr 06, 2011 9:46 pm

I'm thinking of doing a ski tour of Angel of Shavano on Monday 4/11. So far the forecast is partly sunny for monday, but bad weather for the weekend. Anyone want to join?

I didn't take a picture of it today, but a ski descent from the top via the angel looks doubtful to me. search the forum, pioletski posted a picture last week. I think the Grinch ate the angel's top, cuz he was looking fat.

Yep, the angel is already running pretty thin. The right arm only went to 13700' or so when I was up there the last weekend of winter.

Interesting.
2 Bakers post back to back, both holding American flags in their avatar, and now both tied with post count. (that's lame of me to notice such a petty, silly thing. I know. You don't have to tell me.)

And you wonder why people assume you two are related...

I wouldn't want people confusing me with that other Darrin on the site...he's no where near this sexy.

Yeah, I did Shavano on Monday. I could not drive to the blank cabin trailhead since there was a snow drift blocking the route (I think 3 miles from the TH). It will be there for a while. I parked at the angel of shavano campground and hiked the colorado trail to the blank cabin trail head. The colorado trail is almost completely devoid of snow (wear hiking boots). Skinable/skiable snow starts shortly after getting onto the Shavano trail (10000 ft maybe?). The angel has wind compacted snow that is really smooth and nice once it has been a bit warmed. I'd say Avy hazard is very low. I was able to ski directly off of the summit through a maze of rocks almost down to the saddle on the east ridge. Then I had to hop from one snow field to the next to get to the head of the angel. Then continuous skiing downward.

Awesome! Thanks for the update.

Wonder how much snow the area got from the event on 4/13 and 4/14...... I'm guessing it certainly didn't help the road approach, but might have made the skiing better! Probably increased the avy risk for a few days as well.
