Elbert in May!

Postby AZ_bagger » Mon Mar 21, 2011 4:05 pm

I'm from AZ and spent last summer in Colorado. I got 7 summits under my belt and will be returning in May to the Sawatch Mountain Range!
The first one I hit will be Mt. Elbert! Was wondering if it will be to late to do a ski descent around May 17th-ish? If not, what is the best route to start on, or is Elbert the best mountain to do a first-time ski descent?!

Thanks All!

Definitely not too late for a ski descent. The east ridge is mellow and safer if there's any avalanche danger (which there was when I skied it last spring, right after a big spring storm), but the Box Creek Cirque is more exciting if conditions allow. See this trip report from last May, and keep checking on this site for updates on snow conditions throughout the spring.
