Mt. Powell and the Gores conditions

Post by mtngoatwithstyle »

I am thinking on climbing Mt. Powell on the Gore Range this weekend. I know that there is plenty of snow up there. Does anyone know how much they got or has any info on condition there this week?.

I live in Edwards (15 miles west of Vail) at 8,100'. I got about 2 inches last night, prior to that I had steady rain for most of the storm. I can see the New York Mountain (Northern Sawatch) from my deck. They were mostly hidden in the clouds for much of the snow, but when I got a look - the snow level ~10,000' for most of this storm. I suspect they got well over a foot in this storm. I would be prepared for well over a foot of snow and cold weather.. If I were going I would be wearing my La Sportiva Nepal EVO leather mountaineering boots, bring my crampons and axe, change out the baskets on my trekking poles for snow and bring extra layers, with an extra set of gloves.

Gotta love this place. Stood on the top of Castle last week in a in just a base layer, built a snow man on the deck this morning and played 18 holes of golf in the Valley at 10am this morning.
Not as young as I once was and not as old as I want to be.

Here is the north side of Eagles Nest Mountain from a few minutes ago. Mount Powell is just behind there so expect similar conditions.

We climbed Keller yesterday and were not prepared for so much snow. Bad idea to leave the gaiters and trekking poles home, there was 6-10 inches down low and 18-24 inches up high so I had wet boots/socks very quickly. It started dumping around 10 am so I'd expect even more. Hopefully it consolidates for you, it was pure sugar for us and made for perfect ankle breaking conditions.
