Hey all,
Anyone know of any peaks around the Leadville area in the 12-13k range, around 5 miles round trip, maybe 2k of elevation?
Thanks,
Rob

Not the most glamorous but it IS a mountain. The gain probably depends on how high you can get up the road.

How about Twining from Independence Pass? 4 mi r/t with around 1700 ft elev gain (I think...) Indy Pass might be a little further than you want to go.

Sheridan from Iowa Gulch is pretty close to your criteria. Not super glamorous, but avoids the crowds on Sherman.
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

This fits your criteria also (just over 2,000 feet elevation gain in a tad over 4 miles roundtrip). We did Dyer Mountain early one spring. You literally leave from Leadville and drive to the trailhead (very short drive). Happy trails!

As if none of us have ever come back with a cool, quasi-epic story instead of being victim to tragic rockfall, a fatal stumble, a heart attack, an embolism, a lightning strike, a bear attack, collapsing cornice, some psycho with an axe, a falling tree, carbon monoxide, even falling asleep at the wheel getting to a mountain. If you can't accept the fact that sometimes "s**t happens", then you live with the illusion that your epic genius and profound wilderness intelligence has put you in total and complete control of yourself, your partners, and the mountain. How mystified you'll be when "s**t happens" to you! - FM

Check out some of the stuff off 24 south of Holy Cross. Savage, Homestake, Galena. Buckeye (12867) uses a high trailhead off 91.

Many good suggestions have already been mentioned. Another peak that might appeal to you is Prospect Mountain A (12,614). You can park along the Mosquito Pass road, hike to Lake Isabelle and then ascend the south ridge. You could add the unranked sub-peak to the east on the descent to make a loop.

thanks for the replies, we are going to try galena peak, a little longer than we wanted but we're camping by turquoise lake so it's practically right from the campground.
