I'll be doing trail work on Hewlet Gulch this saturday. I'm interested to see what the area looks like. I'll see if I can get any good pictures.

I can say second hand that the person responsible couldn't be a nicer guy (my dad works with him), and has been struggling quite a bit with guilt over causing it.George James wrote:Yeah wow, how awful must it be to be that guy right now. Can't help but feel a little bad for him, I'd imagine I'd be fraught with guilt over the whole thing.Jim wrote:I think a fine is appropriate, but ruining this guy's life over it is not.
Kind of lookin forward to getting up there and seeing what it looks like now. Anybody wanna scamper up the weenie route with me once the trails are opened back up?
George, I'd be down to go up that route with you, I've always wanted to go up Greyrock that way. Shoot me a PM about it when the route opens back up and you've got some time.

Re: Grayrock group -- torched
I drove through the area on Monday - from Walden to Fort Collins - and there was a 2 1/2 mile stretch at 5.5 to 8 miles west of 287 that looked like a big black stripe just above the river. The smoke was completely gone, though. On Sunday it was socked in to the west from Silverthorne all the way to Rabbit Ears Pass, so I was surprised to see it clear out so quickly. Kudos to the firefighters involved... they sure seemed to get it under control fast!

Re: Grayrock group -- torched
I was down in Alabama(PS, don't go to Alabama) while this fire was on and followed along with twitter. It's terribly unfortunate, but whether by lightning or stove we're sorta looking at the future with all of the pine bark beetle (which correct me if I'm mistaken, but I don't think there was much in the burn area). Just the sad truth
I was not aware of the archeological site there, I'll have to check it out. One of these days I'll take on the grand slam and check out the damage. Probably in the spring sometime, at least there will be grasses and flowers.

Greatest Route? I'm all about this. It's going to be a mess on the approach...

I like it! Especially since the last Fort Collins gathering petered out.JohnWilliams wrote:Greyrock Gathering???
If we went as a group up towards the greatest route there's also the chipmunk cracks over there so we could probably get a couple groups up at the same time.

Greatest is awesome! Barfy's Favorite is a good solid 5.7 as well. The Chipmunk routes are not as sustained but fun none the less.

Should we wait to see how the restoration comes?

Sweet, this is starting to sound like an old fashioned Greyrock assault, might have to bring the grill and some weenies.
Looks like they're reopening Hewlett Gulch tomorrow, still expecting the Greyrock Trail to remain closed for a little while though. Guess we'll just wait and see what happens with the assessment.
