leadville hiking??!?!?!
Does anybody know if there is hiking trails in or around Leadville? Im mainly looking for hiking trails that will take us up to old mines or ghost towns. If there are any plz let me know. thank you!

The Mineral Belt trail is a 11 mile developed trail that goes from parts of the town using some old railroad grades in some places and loops through several of the oldest mining areas east of Leadville. It is paved and has signs in many locations explaining which mine ruins you are seeing, for example the Matchless Mine where Baby Doe Tabor lived . It also goes through the Oro City area and California Gulch.
The Forest Service office located on Highway 24 on the west side of town is is a good place to get additional information. They have a brochure that shows the details of the Mineral belt Trail. One thing nice about the Mineral Belt trail is since it loops through so many areas you do not have to do the entire 11 miles all at one time. You can drive out to various areas and check out that segment. Some of the streets are 3 rd, fifth and 7 streets and County Road 2 goes to Oro City/California Gulch. It also leads to the Iowa Gulch trail head for Mount Sherman.
Be careful about just exploring on your own since there are safety and private property issues.
If you drive out 3 rd street towards Mosquito Pass you also see several old mining areas.
Leadville also has the National Mining Museum.
The Golden Burro, the Brass Ass, restaurant in downtown on Harrison Street, the main street through town, is a good place to eat. They have a lot of old pictures of Leadville. Their menu has information on the mining days and also has pictures. After you order your food ask them to leave the menu so you can read it while waiting on your order. You can even buy a copy of it if you want.
