Steamboat Springs Summit Hikes

Post by Greenhouseguy »

I'm spending next weekend with the family at the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup in Steamboat Springs. It's a fun weekend in the mountains for classic car enthusiasts. I've been to Steamboat a few times, and the only trail I've hiked is Fish Creek Falls. Are there any must-do quick & dirty summit hikes that I should be looking for if I can sneak out for a while?

It is still early season though, so expect quite a bit of snow. Snowpack is below average, but expect significant snow above 8000-9000 feet.

Some of the hikes above aren't quick, namely Big Agnes and Zirkel.

PS, if you want to canoe the Yampa River near Steamboat, let me know. I was looking for someone to go with me next week.

I climbed Hann's Peak last year and it was a nice trip. Here is a link to the summitpost write up.

Thanks, Scott & Skerrane. I think that Hahns Peak is pretty much what I was looking for, and I appreciate the advice.

We hiked the rabbit ears 3 weeks ago and it was a nice easy hike with great views. Maybe 1.5 hours each way. It's in Scott P's list with a link.

I wound up hiking Hahn's Peak with my wife and some peripheral family. Some turned back because of deep snow (this was in mid-June). I summited with my stepson and his brother, probably first summits for both. It was a fun hike. Good scenery, nice wildflowers, fairly brisk hike for a 10er. The low treeline made it seem like a miniature 14er. I'd recommend it to anybody in Steamboat with some time to kill.

We debated hiking Hahn's peak while we were out there last month, but picked Gilpin Lake instead. It sounded like they run ATV tours to the summit so that kind of scared us off. Did you notice any evidence of ATV's when you were hiking?

I didn't see any evidence of ATVs, but it was early in the season. It looked like some parts of the trail would be too narrow, but there is also an old mining road that goes most of the way to the summit.

I've never heard that, nor have seen ATV's up there. The last part of the trail is pretty rocky.

ATV's do go on the old mining road, but I've never seen them near the summit.
