Re: anyone been to Lincoln Falls area lately
we went up there sunday...The ice was very good.. it won't last much longer though we could have climbed in t-shirt and shorts. The main flow was thick and plastic. a few of the harder and thinner lines have fallen down but the ice that is there is great.

Re: anyone been to Lincoln Falls area lately
I was up there the past three weekends and even though the ice is still pretty fat, it is melting fast. Every week has seen pretty significant meltage. On Saturday there were sections of the main flow that were more like a waterfall it was melting so fast. It's best to actually get a little later of start and let the sun make it around the corner.

Just curious, but why do you want the sun shining on the ice when it's melting so fast?JonW wrote:It's best to actually get a little later of start and let the sun make it around the corner.
Seems like an earlier start would be okay.

Re: anyone been to Lincoln Falls area lately
It seems that the ice gets direct sun early in the early morning and then it's in the shade in the late morning/early afternoon. On Saturday morning the ice was melting pretty fast (you could see water flowing down the ice) and by the early afternoon the rate of melting slowed down since the ice was no longer in the direct sun.d_baker wrote:Just curious, but why do you want the sun shining on the ice when it's melting so fast?JonW wrote:It's best to actually get a little later of start and let the sun make it around the corner.

Re: anyone been to Lincoln Falls area lately
*BUMP* - I am taking a mountaineering class up to Lincoln this Sunday and am curious if anyone has any updates on conditions. We will only been doing introductory low-angle ice climbing so I don't need much in the way of ice. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Insight: ice climbing works best when it stays cold enough to keep the water frozen.its_not_a_tuba wrote:Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: anyone been to Lincoln Falls area lately
Thank you for your non-contribution. Perhaps you haven't been to Lincoln Falls this time of year and are entirely unaware of how much of the low angle ice stays in well into May. Granted it has been warmer this year which is precisely why I am asking the question.Doug Shaw wrote:Insight: ice climbing works best when it stays cold enough to keep the water frozen.its_not_a_tuba wrote:Any insight would be appreciated. Re: anyone been to Lincoln Falls area lately
We've had some cold nights this week for sure. -12C at ~11,000ft @ 0700 a couple of mornings ago. Without windchill. There's still low angle ice hanging around in 10 Mile Canyon as well. The Three Tiers path slide pretty big just before this last weather event so I'd venture to say there isn't as much snow above it. The rapid warming tomorrow could show us some new results.
