Photo upload problem with Trip Reports

Postby Marmot72 » Sun Jul 01, 2012 8:20 pm

Hi. I'm getting an error message that my photos have exceeded the dimensions. They are all well under the 12 mb size limit. I compared pixel size and MB file size to other photos in trip reports I've uploaded in the past, and these are inside that range. I've also tried uploading 2-3 at a time versus one at a time.

My first thought was that this is something with my PC or that I'm doing something wrong, but after some preliminary troubleshooting, it seems to be the site.

What are the dimensions of your images? Not the file size in MB, but the pixel dimensions.

Bill,
The photos I was trying were something like 4600 x 2800...so I was going to try sizing them down, but then I saw that I have a pic in my Bushnell report that was apporx 4000 x 3000.

Yup,
the 4600 x 2800 pics are too large for the upload process and must be resized prior to upload. The max dimensions image size is 12,000,000 pixels. Your 4000x3000 were ok but 4600x2800 pixel photos are 12,880,000 pixels. Width X height will give you the pixels.

So, if you resize those pics down a bit, they will upload.

Any chance this limit will get increased in the future? Just ran into the same issue myself.

Sorry, this won't be changed any time soon.

Re-sizing:

1. Divide pixel width by 4,000 (or height by 3,000, whichever yields a smaller percentage) and round down, i.e. 4600 / 4000 = 0.869 --> 86%

2. Open file in MS Paint.

3. <Ctrl+W> to "Stretch/Skew" (under Image tab).

4. Enter 86[%] for both H and V.

5. Click <OK>.

6. <Ctrl+E> ("Attributes") to verify dimensions are within spec.

7. <Ctrl+S> to save file or "File"-->"Save as" if you want to preserve original.

8. Upload reduced file.

Many cameras allow you to select the image/MP size which can alleviate editing later.

Another alternative is to upload the images to a photo sharing site and then hotlink to them via the Img button on the TR composition page (see Instructions).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_photo_sharing_websites

There are many sites for panorama photos as well which you can hotlink to. See my TRs for examples as I use a variety of media and links. Good luck!
Not sure if I'll do more 14ers. The trip reports are too tiring.

It's even easier on my Mac in Preview; just change the max dimension to 4000 and the other dimension takes care of itself.

I've got a similar problem. I have 30 photos that are 2160 x 1620, and the largest file size is 1665 kB. I was uploading 10 at a time to a draft trip report, and the first 19 uploaded just fine but I can't add any beyond that. Suggestions?

Your last trip report was back in September - is that what you're referring to? Are you having problems with it now? Also, the way you're referencing photos within your TRs is a bit messed up so you're getting some garbage and missing images when the report is displayed. To display an uploaded photo in the report, enter the code like this: where "13" is the number of the photo to be shown.

No, this is a new TR I was working on yesterday. It's in "inactive" status while I work out the kinks.
