74 Points

Post by Mountain Ninja »

Sorry in advance if this has already been discussed, but I just noticed the Spire was added to the "74 14er points" list.

Has anyone done all 74 yet?

Sgladbach and dancesatmoonrise did the Spire together. An easy way to check is to select the Spire Trip Teports, then look at the peak lists of the posters as well as who joined them.

Thanks Tallgrass. Yes, Mr. Gladbach did the Spire (as several others have). However, it doesn't look like he actually completed the list of 74.

So do we know if anyone has completed all 74 points?

If you're skilled enough to do the Spire, you got bigger fish to fry than South Bross.

Like many others, I'm working on it. Another difficulty aside from the Spire is NE Crestone....

I have climbed all of them except Sunlight Spire...cuz when I was chasing that list, Sunlight Spire wasn't on it!

Now I need someone who can lead it for me. Any takers?

I don't have the skillset for that yet, but can give you a spot or a foothold if that'd help.

How is it on the list now; some sort of uplift...?

All elevations in Colorado were adjusted higher a few years ago due to an adjustment of ellipsoid vs. geoid calculation.

You can see the new elevations of the Colorado 14ers below:

http://climb.mountains.com/Project_Isla ... 4ers.shtml" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sunlight Spire's old telemetry elevation was 13,995, but it should be adjusted 5 feet upwards, making the new telemetry elevation 14,000 feet. It however doesn't have enough elevation prominence to be a ranked 14er.

As someone who HAS summitted South Bross, I resent this statement.

Here's an article if you are interested:

You can see the adjustment/new altitude for all points using the online calculator below:

http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_radius.prl" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(As a note for clarification, it was actually a world wide-adjustment and if affects more than Colorado).
