Crestones: think that snow will hang around?

Post by macgyver »

Making it out to the Crestones near the end of month or early Sept. Do you think that snow in the Red Gulley and/or BHP has a good chance at melting off by that time? Just curious.

It was almost melted through on the route that goes straight up the middle of the snow field on Saturday. Either way, it's avoidable going to the right side of the left gulley or the right side of the right gulley. You might be able to go up and around the left side also.

You can currently avoid it, just climb some rocks instead.

Snow near top of BHP is not a problem. On Saturday, we easily climbed it with just poles in the morning...soft, great steps kicked in. For the descent, we just went in the moat on skiers' left.

Sorry, no intel for Crestone Peak...we were on the Needle.

Grudge match. You boys should square off. No holds barred.

Nah, it's easier to run your mouth on the internet while hiding behind a computer screen.

So, back to the Crestones. Thanks for information thus far. Very helpful everyone.
I can ask this same question on the facebook page if you'd like to take the blabber there.

Sorry, didn't specify. I was talking about BHP. Like others have said snow in the red gulley is easily avoidable except a 10' crossing. A slip and fall there wouldn't be fun but not life threatening.

Echoing others: avoid snow on Broken Hand Pass by ascending rock on the right. Avoid snow in the red gully of Crestone Peak by ascending grassy ledges on left. Near the top, cross eight steps of snow, grab some sharp rocks first.
