mt massive conditions and N Halfmoon creek trailhead access

Post by chayadecacao »

Hi All,
I'm relatively new to this site so please excuse this post if i'm in the wrong spot!
I'm considering doing massive this weekend and wondered about the trailhead access.

http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/trailhead ... hparm=sw02" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

the status page mentioned there are some large holes on the way up the trail. however i'm unclear as to whether those are within the first 2 miles of the 4WD trail OR the last .5 miles up to the top trailhead. Can anyone please help clarify?

I have an older model subi forester and am don't have an incredible amount of off road experience short of driving around in rocky MOAB back roads, i did the road up to elbert that has a stream crossing on it.

Can anyone help me understand whether i'll need to navigate my vehicle around a huge crevasse or if that is the upper, upper section? i suppose i could hike the extra 4 miles as well.

Many thanks for any feedback.

I was up there June 19 and the holes are in the last 0.5 miles after the junction with 110J. It was probably 0.1 miles past the junction. There was another rough spot or two between there and the trailhead but they all seemed more manageable than the first section. I wasn't able to get past it in a 2000 CRV but I don't have a lot of off roading or 4WD experience. If you made it up the road for Elbert's SE ridge, then you should be able to make it to the junction no problem.

ok cool. Hey thanks. I was hoping to be able to get to the junction. Sounds like that is very doable.

Really appreciate the beta!

I'm going to be doing Mt Massive tommorow (Friday). I have an outback that I am taking so I'll respond back tomorrow with my experiences.

hey sweet - thanks. the road up to the junction was totally fine in my forester. i did it on the 3rd. It was narrow and rocky in places but i kept my speed slow and i had no issues getting in or out! i can attest to the upper .5 miles - there are two sections that are quite rutted out - on steeper parts of the road. i saw a SUV struggling to get through the first set of ruts. All vehicles parked at the TH were large 4wd (takomas, yukons, etc). you just need a bit of clearance to get through the 2 rutted out sections.

honestly though, the walk from the junction to the TH is no big deal.

Appreciate the input. :)
