Re: san luis, standard or wwc?
I did the standard route and would not recommend it just due to the extremely long drive to get to the trailhead on a dirt road. Granted you don't need 4WD, but it is like 40 miles from a paved road. That sucked. I would gladly trade 2-3 miles of hiking for 80 miles roundtrip on a 20-30 mph dirt road.

Re: san luis, standard or wwc?
It's on my list as well, maybe next week. The WWC trailhead is probably my choice, since it's closer to me (northern NM). It looks like better access to nearby towns like Creede and South Fork than the standard route.
Any way you see it, this is a pretty isolated 14er.

I did the standard route and enjoyed it, but I agree it was a long back road drive to the TH. Looked like there were some nice camp sites off the road though.

Re: san luis, standard or wwc?
I have not yet summited San Luis, but we did attempt it a couple years ago, did not summit due to my youngest daughter starting to run out of gas at about 13,000 ft, but when I do head back to get it I an going to get it from West Willow Creek. The Stewart Creek TH area is absolutely gorgeous, I am glad we went and got to see it, camp there overnight and then hike almost four miles in, but, it is literally an hour and a half from any place resembling civilization.wizzer wrote:Planning on San Luis this week. Any opinion on route (standard NE or West willow creek)? I like an early start so I'm not sure if either is harder to navigate in the dark, but I do like the sound of a shorter non-standard route. Gimme some thoughts. Thx.
Seems like the times that I need a mountain the most are the times that I can not get to them.

I loved it from WWC due to the relative solitude. We saw four people until the summit of San Luis Peak. Here is a link to my trip report which is hopefully useful in your research
