We are planning on the Bells this weekend and would appreciate any updates.

Re: Snowstorm in the Elk Range
We were planning to do the Bells Traverse tomorrow but I think the weather has been too iffy for something that long and exposed. I am in Glenwood and the last few days it is has been cloudy and drizzly with the hardest rain in the early evenings.

Just a precautionary reminder but loose rock slopes (which defines most of the Elk Range) are generally much more loose after prolonged periods of rain/moisture. Be careful out there!
Re: Snowstorm in the Elk Range
Well said, Ryan ... and just to clarify, we're not just talking loose slopes as in you slipping when ascending or descending peaks, but also rockslides have a greater potential as the ground beneath has been saturated and stuff that may have been secure before has a chance of not being so afterwards (and that can happen above or below you on slopes that you have not even tread upon).by SuperPolok » Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:58 am

As if none of us have ever come back with a cool, quasi-epic story instead of being victim to tragic rockfall, a fatal stumble, a heart attack, an embolism, a lightning strike, a bear attack, collapsing cornice, some psycho with an axe, a falling tree, carbon monoxide, even falling asleep at the wheel getting to a mountain. If you can't accept the fact that sometimes "s**t happens", then you live with the illusion that your epic genius and profound wilderness intelligence has put you in total and complete control of yourself, your partners, and the mountain. How mystified you'll be when "s**t happens" to you! - FM

Re: Snowstorm in the Elk Range
Hey everyone,
So I haven't seen any snow around here and will go back to the bells tomorrow to double check everything, but it's been cloudy pretty much all week. The rain hasn't been strong, but there are off & on light showers pretty much all day starting in the mornings. The trail to crater lake was pretty muddy and had numerous small pools of water, so I can only imagine what the upper slopes on these peaks are like.

FWIW, just talked to the nice folks at the Aspen ranger station, and they reported that conditions on the Four Pass Loop should be just great over the weekend. OK, maybe a bit soggy here and there, but it's autumn in the Rockies, so what do you expect? Now, I didn't ask about the peaks, but that'll at least get you part way.

Re: Snowstorm in the Elk Range
Well if you guys that were going to do it this weekend want to wait a week when the weather is hopefully better, unless the conditions get worse it seems like my trip is still on for the 21st-22nd and I'd be happy to have the company.
