Too late for Long's?

Post by Gypsysoul »

Planning to hike Long's this week. Did anyone hike it this weekend? Wondering on the conditions.

I hiked to Chasm Lake today and ran into a party that had attempted Longs today. They said they turned around at the narrows due to "4 feet of snow" and described the trough as "knee to waist deep" and that "a slip you kill you". That said...1) It was pretty warm today and the snow everywhere else seemed pretty shallow and 2) I know appearances can be deceiving, but they looked quite unprepared due to zero ice axes, members dressed in hoodies and running pants, tiny packs, tennis shoes, etc. so I'd take that info with a grain of salt. Also, there were several other very well-equipped parties up there (we saw Jim Detterline cruising up the trail) as well and I would be surprised if Longs was not summited today.

Not sure if this helps but it's all I know. Gook luck.

I hiked Alice yesterday and got a pretty good view of the Narrows/Homestretch. There was definitely snow on both as well as in the upper portion of the Trough. On Alice I experienced about a foot to a foot and a half of snow above 12k that did not melt while I was on the peak, however with a few more days of sun and warm temps it likely will. I'd expect a similar situation on Longs.
