Post by Dancesatmoonrise »

Anyone with current info regarding snow amounts on the Chicago Basin peaks for Tuesday night, Wed, and Wed night 9-7 and 9-8, would appreciate the info.

Thanks.

Unless something has changed, I was in Chicago Basin 9/1-9/3 and there was absolutely no snow. Took the train from Silverton on Wednesday afternoon, climbed all four peaks on Thursday, and was out Friday morning. Spectacular weather - hope you have the same ! The goats were all in the upper Twin Lakes Basin, and weren't at all a nuisance in the camping areas.

Same deal... was there 9/3-9/5... totally dry, BUT some people were saying that some snow was in the forecast for high elevations at the beginning of this week.

Thanks, guys and gals. Jct was forecasting 1-3 today and possibly another inch tonight, with colder temps into Friday, for the Chicago Basin area.

Thanks for the info on the goats! How were the marmots and rodents in the main basin camping area?

Looks like I missed everyone last week. Glad you guys had a great trip and superb weather!

Jim -

I was in Chicago Basin a few years ago for a winter mountaineering course and was absolutely terrorized by goats and marmots. Cute the first day....throwing rocks near them by day two because they were such a nuisance.

I had a completely different experience last week. Didn't see one goat or marmot in the camping area in Chicago Basin - they all seemed to be hanging out in the upper Twin Lakes Basin. Hmmm.....maybe the goats know it's getting to be hunting season and are getting away from the hunters ?? :? We took precautions and hung everything - but had zero problems with the wildlife this time around.

Hope you have a great trip and the weather holds up for you !
