Can we have a bird identification app, too? :)

Perhaps a "flowers of the Rockies (or wherever)" recognition app so all my nice FB photos don't just say "purple and white flower" or "little blue flowers."

I'd like an insect recognition app. I've seen some of the weirdest f'in insects in Sangres that I don't see anywhere else in the state.

I was up there on Friday... it felt like a hurricane ... apparently the record is set at 231 mph, so above 100mph is completely possible... i was almost knocked down to the ground few times if it wasn't for my hiking pole

You know, a simple weather-station attachment to the iPhone could probably solve all our problems. Hmmm....

No, too risky for iPhone's warranty from hell. Even risking getting it wet, from direct contact or wind-blown humidity, is not worth the aggrevation.

Some of those Kestrels have some kind of bluetooth capability. Maybe they could chat from the safety of their respective cases. :)

I was just to your west on Mt. Massive on Saturday. No wind issues at all. Strange. There was a fire on one of the hillsides near Sherman. Here is a photo of it taken at 9 a.m. Sat morning (digitally zoomed). As you can see, the smoke is nearly vertical, indicating no wind at that position.

High winds are not that uncommon on Sherman.

I was up August 1, 2009 and we recorded 79MPH gusts across the ridge.

I have never experienced winds like this on a mountain before.
-Just as soon as you idiot proof something, some a**hole is just going to come along and make a better idiot.

-To Cessna: "November one, zero, four Lima Papa, wind 080 at 90 peak gusts 120, runway 35 cleared for takeoff"

To fellow controller: "Watch this sh!t"

-Whether climbing or flying, the single greatest thing to remember is that every ascent is optional, and if you feel like making another, your subsequent descent is mandatory.

My wife and I attempted Sherman that day with our sons' (6 & 4) first attempt at a 14er. Got up to the saddle and flipped around - after all, we were wanting to make it a positive experience (and not have them get blown off the mountain). We weren't sure, but guessed they were 60 mph winds that day. Not too far off. We made it back and gained the summit a month later on a much calmer day.

Anything like this. March ascent of Silverheels. I could lean into the wind for a long time without tipping over.
Turn down your volume, although the wind noise is pretty representative.

I was up on the DeCaLiBron Saturday just north of you and the winds got pretty wicked near Cameron's summit (9am or so) and kept up throughout the morning. I'm a BIG dude and it's clear that I'm leaning into the wind in my summit photo, looking like the old Maxell cassette commercial dude. I checked the NOAA point forecast from 3:30am that day before leaving Fairplay and it was for "winds increasing to 9-14mph with gusts of 22mph". I'd say someone whiffed on that one, because 22mph winds are common here in Missouri and this was definitely a little more breezy than that!
