San Luis

Post by Reneesach »

My husband and are are planning to hike San Luis in a few weeks. We are looking for a place to car camp with facilities( hot showers) near the trailhead...or as close as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions or the closest towns to the trailhead?
Thanks,
Renee

Good luck. I think there's forty miles of dirt road to get to the trailhead from the nearest paved surface. There are reasonable areas to camp near the trailhead up Stewart Creek.

If easy access and hotel/shower are important and you want to stay in the San Juans, you could do Sneffels. It has all those things and is a little more challenging.

If you're settled on San Luis, look here for more TH info: http://www.14ers.com/php14ers/trailhead ... hparm=sj15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Assuming you're using the Stewart Creek TH then the closest hot shower is in Parlin. However if you're going to be that far away anyway you might as well stay somewhere in Gunnison and have a few more ammenities available. There's really nothing anywhere near that trailhead with a hot shower.

Stay in Creede and use the West Willow trailhead...it's a great hike from that side.

The West Willow trailhead is close to Creede and a very nice route; however, it is much longer and includes some ups and downs. If you are in good shape and the weather is good, it's the more scenic route and the trailhead is closer to civilization.

Been a while but we stayed at the Snowshoe Motel. Reasonable rates and nice people that own it. Check out the Creede Repertory Theatre when you are there too. Cool place to watch a show.

Here is a TR I posted in June on the West Willow Creek route.

You will find many lodging options in South Fork, CO which is only 20 miles south of Creede.

I have been to the Stewart Creek trailhead and have hiked San Luis twice in the last two weeks. The nearest towns with facilities are Gunnison and Parlin, both about 60 miles from the trailhead. The trailhead is 20 miles south of US50 on CO114 and then 30 miles on county roads NN14 and 15GG. The drive on CO114 takes about 30 minutes and the drive on the county dirt roads takes about an hour with an SUV in daylight and more with a car or at night.
