Sherman Snow Report

Post by JosephG »

Anybody know snow conditions on Sherman? A few of us are considering it this weekend and would appreciate any info.

Anything about the snow pack on the saddle to Sheridan would be appreciated, too!

Thanks...

Did you make it to Sherman? I was thinking about it this weekend and am wondering about the conditions.

No; opted for Quandary instead. A shorter day out was necessary, and CAIC suggested caution, though you probably can avoid any avy paths.

If you go, please post what you find!

I am guessing from the west would be pretty dangerous right now. We have gotten a ton of snow in Leadville over the past week. Last night was very fluffy snow and it turned to wet heavy stuff early in the morning totaling about 6 to 8 inches in town. I would say much more and the same conditions near Sherman.

Here are a couple of shots taken this past Saturday. I apologize for these not being the greatest. The first image is a distant overview shot of Sherman and Fourmile Creek. The second is a close-up of Sherman with the winter route angling down and to the right. It looked like continuous snow could be had.

My destination required me to jump off the road about 1 mile beyond Leavick. In the morning, my partner and I were able to boot it to this point. However, we had to wear flotation on the return trip.

We saw two snowmobilers in the afternoon on the road and that was it. No cars at the trailhead. That's rare.

The last four miles of the road (leading to the usual winter closure) could have used a plowing. I barely made it in my Civic which surprised me because I've never had issues up there before in winter. I can laugh about it now but there were 7-8 snowy sections that felt like a bobsled run. Couple that with the fact that nobody else was up there and I may have been looking at a nice stroll out to 285.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. Good luck.
