Recommendation for 14er(San Juan/Sangre) in early June?

Post by haybo01 »

I have climbed 30-some 14’ers over the last few years. My goal is to get all 52/54 before I die or get too old. Speaking of getting old, I turn 50 in late May and would like to climb a 14er in early June. I can think of nothing I would rather do on my birthday than climb a 14er.

Does anyone have some advice for me on what 14ers might be accessible in early June for a summer climber like me? (I don't have crampons, an ice axe, or any other equipment or experience to take on ice and snow.) In years past I have climbed my first of the season in early to mid June. I do have a cheap pair of snow shoes, but have only used them for easy recreational stuff, not strenuous hikes (like a 14er). I am not averse to buying an ice axe, crampons, micro spikes or whatever but don’t want to spend too much $ on gear I won’t use much.

I have not climbed much in the San Juan’s and Sangre de Christos’, only Blanca and Handies respectively. I have not climbed any of the 14ers in the Elks.

Any advice is welcome. Thank you!

San Luis, Sunshine/Redcloud and Humboldt would be good candidates. Follow the snow reports and consider an axe if there's still a decent amount of snow.

Good luck! Layne
