Pikes Peak Conditions?

Postby sandy » Wed Nov 04, 2009 4:40 pm

Has anyone been up there the last few days? Much snow or ice? I'm looking at Pikes Peak Crags Trail head this weekend.

Thanks,

Sandy

Bring your snowshoes if you plan on hitting the summit. :)

I live at 9,600' by Pikes and we got about 2.5-3 feet with the last storm. A lot has melted the last few days due the warm weather but I suspect that not much has melted around timber line. You might have a few feet to wade through.

Lots of snow last week and weekend. Temps are warm this week, but snow should remain in the trees (I hope). On Sat, everyone parked at the lower trailhead (just past the Menonite Camp); one guy did ruin the skin track by driving up to the new trailhead, but was stuck there when we skied down past him.

This photo was taken on 10/27/09 a Monday on the Barr Trail....we made it about 300' or so above this point....If you are doing Barr definitely MicroSpikes and snowshoes would probably be helpful in spots also.

Have Fun!

Steve

It is rough!!

We tried to make it to the Summit it today and couldn't. There was about 10 other people wondering around trying to make their way up.

There is a lot of snow: 2 to 3 foot on average were not packed. 4ft + drifts.

Unless you really know the trail well I wouldn't advise doing it. We followed other tracks and ended up hiking 15 miles and didn't reach the summit....yeah it should be only 6 one way.

Have fun, be prepared for hard conditions and lots of snow.

Forgot to add...the road getting to the lower and upper parking lot are tough to get up. You have to have 4wd and good tires to make it.

So true, as I found out yesterday. I made it to the summit but it was brutal.

Glad you made it. I am trying again this weekend. I think that I was just below you on the mountain. We left just after you, and see one person off in the distance several times. Did you have a bright orange or yellow jacket on?

Had a red shirt under a black vest.. I was alone on the ascent but two groups of 2 hiked up an hour after me so it may have been one of them.

Could have used snowshoes below treeline. Once you get to the ridge the wind is blowing hard so the snow is packed in most places. Because of the sun I was post-holing the Devil's Playground section on the return--and of course below treeline was a nightmare.

Anyone summit Pikes by Barr Trail this past weekend or know conditions above Barr Camp on that part of the mountain?
