I did a report of my solo trip up this past summer....there are are few good pics of the narrows, trough, and homestretch that will give you a really good idea of what you're up for once you step through the keyhole. I have other pics as well if you need more motivation...just drop me a pm.

Longs Peak is one of my favorite peaks, and think it's definitely within your ability (if you're prepared and know what to expect). I dragged along a couple newbies when I did it, which in hindsight wasn't very smart, but besides being out of shape they seemed to handle the scrambling alright.

If you're still in the Salt Lake/Provo area, I'd recommend doing Twin Peaks or Lone Peak. While they don't have the elevation of Longs, both of them are just as physically demanding and the scrambling, while not as sustained, has a couple spots that are tricker than what you'll see on Longs. If you can do them, then Longs won't be a problem. Timpanogos is comparable distance-wise, but I'd concur with Scott that you'll definitely want to train to improve your pace so that you're in good enough shape to actually enjoy the Longs experience.

The one thing the Wasatch doesn't really have is those constant afternoon thunderstorms, so it can't be emphasized enough on how important an early start and early descent from the summit are. We got stuck in a lightning storm on the way down from Longs, which is probably the scariest experience I've had in the mountains (trip report is at http://www.summitpost.org/trip-report/253407/En-lightning-Experience-Keyhole-Route.html).

Have fun! The views into Glacier Gorge are great, and the scrambling is fun and straighforward.

the problem with training in Little cottonwood canyon (lone peak, twin peaks, mount baldy) is there is a ton of snow up there right now, plus the resorts are opening up for the season, so in my opinion my best bet is gonna be to treadmill/elyptical/stair master till spring. and i plan on hitting Timp before i go out to Longs

but all of this has been really helpful :)
