Hiker dies from Fall on Mt Whitney

Post by nyker »

Sad news from last month:

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-m ... 0287.story" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

From folks who where on the mountain that day, this appears to have happened near the MMWT/JMT junction - possibly around "Trail Crest" on the Main Trail.

Very sad indeed. I thought the main trail was class 1. What is the Trail Crest like?

The trail has some exposure near the route around the area west of Trail Crest-there's a few cliffs very close to the trail and with ice or snow the Risk increases especially new snow drifts against that area.

That whole stretch from trail crest along the ridge to Whitney has some pretty harrowing dropoffs. With snow or ice it could be scary.
