Especially with out of state plates. A few years ago, Rio Arriba county had the worst heroin problem in the country and I haven't heard anything about it getting better up there.desertdog wrote: I would not leave my car at that TH.

Thanks much! That seems like the best way to daytrip the group, but it probably isn't worth a new set of windows.

I think the issue is the road and/or TH are on private property.Monster5 wrote:Do you know if vandalism is still a problem at the Quemado trailhead? Or is the whole thing exaggerated?
A NM climber told me to leave my vehicle unlocked with a case of beer in the front seat - seems like that could backfire.
The owner requests you contact him before using that TH. I did and climbed Truchas without a problem.

Re: Northern New Mexico conditions?
I've heard something similar, and don't recall anyone having complained of vandalism who'd received permission prior to parking there. That said, I'm pretty sure I've heard the road into the Quemado TH experienced a washout, making the roundtrip from that side only ~6 miles shorter than the other common options. Given how gorgeous I've heard Jacks Creek is, I'm inclined to just avoid Quemado altogether in favor of a more scenic and relaxing route.

Re: Northern New Mexico conditions?
I was in Taos last weekend and I was staring at Wheeler the whole time. It's not quite summer conditions but will be there very soon. I wanted to take my girlfriend up it but it just wasn't quite dry enough for her taste. We did some killer rock climbing instead(and we didn't see one single person at the crag all day - holy crap! not like Boulder Canyon at all )
Re: Northern New Mexico conditions?
We did Pecos Baldy(s) yesterday in good conditions. Some snow in the trees on the last quarter of the approach to the lake...no need for snowshoes though. Summited both peaks.Matt wrote:Please report back after doing Pecos Baldy (don't forget East, it's ranked). Our plan is to start in Cowles for a Truchas hike, so you'd be covering much of our approach.desertdog wrote:I am doing Pecos Baldy this coming Saturday and expect similard conditions to gold hill with a bit less snow.
I would expect the approaches to the Truchas still to have snow.
Its going to warm this week so I think the melt will be fast with most snow gone by around 6/15.
If you have specific peaks in mind let me know.
As Chris mentioned, the map used on LoJ indicates much less snow around there than in the Wheeler/Gold Hill area. Let's hope so...
Thank you.
Trailriders Wall looked snow free. Truchas looked in good shape as well.
Come on down!

The summit is a source of power. The long view gives one knowledge and time to prepare. The summit, by virtue of the dizzying exposure, leaves one vulnerable. A bit of confidence and a dash of humility is all we get for our work. Yet to share these moments with friends is to be human. C. Anker

Thanks a ton for the update--I'm glad to hear the snowshoes will be staying home! Hope you had an enjoyable trip...desertdog wrote:We did Pecos Baldy(s) yesterday in good conditions. Re: Northern New Mexico conditions?
I was looking at Pecos Baldy tomorrow! Everything looked pretty dry from the drive down 285.
I did the Taylor/La Mosca combo today. A few small, crusty snowbanks on the north side of Taylor and that's it. It was cool and breezy up there though, and I got graupeled on on the way back.

Echoing Chris, thanks very much. I've been looking forward to these peaks for years.desertdog wrote: We did Pecos Baldy(s) yesterday in good conditions. Some snow in the trees on the last quarter of the approach to the lake...no need for snowshoes though. Summited both peaks.

Let us know if you'd like to meet up at Horseman's Haven for our post-climb chile fest. Probably Monday, unless we hike out on summit day (Sunday).
On a related note from earlier in the thread, Jim, if you have any interest in this, shoot me a PM.

Re: Northern New Mexico conditions?
How about Wheeler? Any thoughts on if it will be dry by this weekend? Thanks!
Re: Northern New Mexico conditions?
My pleasure. After all the help I've gotten over the years on conditions in CO its good to be able to return the favor.Matt wrote:Echoing Chris, thanks very much. One thing I forgot to mention. When you come to Pecos Baldy Lake take the gully on the far side on the left of the lake to the saddle rather than the trail to miss some deep snow.
Also, thanks for the invite, but I'm climbing Jicarita and SF Baldy Peaks those days.
Enjoy!
Richard
