Elizabeth, yes, the hurricane tore down trees everywhere. Lots of old maples, hemlock and spruce were taken down.

It was the something moving in when you left. The snow fell Sunday through right now, it might still be accumulating.

In the Gib Brown report he says Mt Mansfield got 25", and Whiteface had over a foot yesterday, but the ski area is closed when I went to look it up on line. I think the report is on Jay Peak & Killington because those resorts are still open, but I get the feeling the heavy snow is for all high elevation terrain in the region.

Awesome pictures! Whiteface is one of my favorites. But I did it in the fall, well before the snow.

I just checked forecast for tomorrow. Manchester is supposed to get to 90F. Even Wednesday is supposed to be over 80F.

Wow. Same here in NYC. it's been a warm year here, warmest Feb ever and 2nd warmest March... needless to say, no snowshoeing in Central Park this year.

Greetings!

I am in Albany area for a while and in need of some hiking advice in the Adirondack. I am looking for peaks that allow me to gain (somewhat straight up) 3000ft from TH to summit, as simple as Quandary Peak. I am looking for not too far from Albany.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Anyone needs to weekend hiking partner, please send PM.

Giant from Chapel Pond is perfect for that. Just barely over 3K' vertical gain in about 3 miles 1 way. Start from the Roaring Brook trail head for an extra mile & 400' vertical (and generally less crowded). I like to make a loop out of those trails. Gothics from that same parking area is about 3500' gain but there is an extra mile or so approach. Whiteface from the Wilmington town water supply is about 3500' gain in 5.1 miles. If you start from the Atmospheric Research station up the road is becomes about 3K' vertical gain in about 4 miles or so. For the next couple of weeks until it opens you can make a loop using the auto road, which I enjoy when it is covered by snow. Those are probably the best bang for your buck as far as vertical gain in a short distance from the car.
