Lakes and rivers

Postby PaliKona » Sat May 18, 2013 12:17 pm

What are your favorite bodies of water to hike to or along? I don't know about you, but I love to hike in a beautiful valley with a loud turbulent river and also to a gorgeous alpine lake. Also waterfalls! I love Boulder Falls but wish it was a real hike to get there.
My favorite lakes are: Chasm, The Loch, Blue Lake in IPW, Mohawk Lakes, Misouri Lakes and Crater Lakes, both in the Maroon Bells and under Lone Eagle Peak. My favorite river to follow was along the hike in to Lone Eagle Peak. I'd love to hear yours to help me plan some hikes this summer.

I see you haven't done Kit Carson yet. You're going to love that one.

I've been to many worthy lakes, but these are some particularly excellent front range standouts:

Blue, Green, and Frozen Lakes in upper Glacier Gorge.

The Lion Lakes and Snowbank Lake in Wild Basin.

The hike up to Navajo Basin has three waterfalls: “West Dolores River Falls,” “Kilpacker Creek Falls” and “Navajo Basin Falls.”

Of course, if you visit all three falls, you might as well continue another half-mile up to the lake. I hear they got some pretty peaks up there, too!

North Fork trail in RMNP follows along the river quite a ways, plus a nice string of lakes once you get into the Mummies
Some rise, some fall, some climb to get to terrapin
