Roll Call: Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon

Postby colorado yooper » Sun Mar 17, 2013 7:22 pm

Who's in and what's your goal?

I'll start

Wave 2 Ascent

1st time so I'll guess a time of 4:15ish but who the heck knows... Most important goal is to have fun and smile the whole way.

Round-trip! Looking forward to doing it fresh - did the double in 2011, and Sunday's trip up was just....really....painful.

Mark your calendars - the 3rd annual ELK PARK BBQ is Sunday, July 28th. This event signifies the end of crazy training for Pikes and the beginning of the taper period. Elk Park is a parking area at 11,800' off the highway that many training for the Peak are familiar with. Elk Park to Barr Camp is aroundabout 5 miles, drops about 1,500'. Suck it in and do work for 3k from Barr Camp up to the summit and hitch a ride with one of the gazillion peak-trainers already at the top doing 3-2-1's and such back to Elk Park.

Round trip for me again as well (still aiming to take down Oprah's marathon time, as it just does sit well that her marathon PR is 20 minutes faster than mine) .

Really just hoping to PR by improving upon my abysmal downhill splits from my previous two PPMs and improve on the ascent by a few minutes (sounds easy enough sitting here at my desk :) ).

Like FireOnTheMountain, doing the Marathon for the first time (I've done the Ascent the last four years). I entered a predicted total time of 5:50, but I really have no idea what my downhill time will be, since I rarely run downhill.

colorado yooper, good luck on your first! I find that doing Barr during training is extremely helpful, both to build up the endurance for race day, and to get a feeling for what to expect and how much to push yourself.

This'll be the first one for me. Just the Ascent, Wave 2. 4:30ish maybe?

Thanks to you guys who recommended the Ralston Creek Half as a qualifier, by the way.

I'm trying the Ascent again this year, hoping to run closer to history (4 hr & change) than last year's death march.... I'll be checking into the beer tent WAAAYYY after the leaders.
That's some catch that catch 22
