Officially 1F downtown, but I had -2F at the house. The first below 0 temperature of the season. Time to bundle up for climbs.

I'm slow and fat. Unfortunately, those are my good qualities.

Calendar Winter does start on Dec. 21st but higher elevations and northern latitudes get settled into winter conditions about a month earlier or when the snow starts to linger and cold weather is more consistent. Winter is definitely here in the Colorado High Country! Welcome Back!

It stayed pretty toasty at my house last night. We never dropped below 6.

A toasty 11F in the Ken Caryl Valley.

One word: nosebleed. :| My furnace has been running all morning.

This was the overnight forecast for Mount Massive last night:
Mostly clear, with a low around -14. Wind chill values between -40 and -45. Windy, with a northwest wind 30 to 35 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

WTF?!!!?!!!
"Mountains seem to answer an increasing imaginative need in the West. More and more people are discovering a desire for them, and a powerful solace in them. At bottom, mountains, like all wildernesses, challenge our complacent conviction - so easy to lapse into - that the world has been made for humans by humans. Most of us exist for most of the time in worlds which are humanly arranged, themed and controlled. One forgets that there are environments which do not respond to the flick of a switch or the twist of a dial, and which have their own rhythms and orders of existence. Mountains correct this amnesia. By speaking of greater forces than we can possibly invoke, and by confronting us with greater spans of time than we can possibly envisage, mountains refute our excessive trust in the man-made. They pose profound questions about our durability and the importance of our schemes. They induce, I suppose, a modesty in us."

Oh hell. Someone has dared to hint that it might have been colder somewhere than it was in Craig. Now we're going to have to hear from Scott about how Craig is actually colder than the dark side of Pluto on most days of the year, and is the only place in the known universe to have recorded a temperature below absolute zero.

It got a bit chilly last night in my apartment, but I still have not had to turn on the heat. My computer acts as a pretty effective space heater.
