Re: What are you reading?
In recent months:
The Last Season: the circumstances around SEKI backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson's disappearance and death in the Sierra backcountry.
The Pine Barrens: John McPhee's well written history of our country's most unique "wilderness" area
The Lost City of Z: another story of an adventurer who ventures into wilderness in search of some fabled city. Reminds me of Finding Bigfoot in some ways...
World War Z: love the creativity of this novel. It really transports the reader to a different place.
Nudge: behavioral economics is fascinating.

Re: What are you reading?
Just finished The Pass, written by Stewart Edward White in 1906, about the wilderness trip he made in the Sierra Nevadas with his wife, a friend, a few horses and a couple of dogs. It mainly concerns figuring out how to cut across the Sierra without the aid of trails or any idea if a route would work, and the naming of Elizabeth Pass (after his wife). Sure makes you appreciate modern equipment and clothing. It also demonstrated the appalling lack of LNT principles in place back then, but may have been somewhat necessary in order to survive the times/conditions.
Bad decisions often make good stories.

There's a similar book about Grand Canyon called Over the Edge that I found interesting. Lots of statistics and historical stories.hokiehead wrote:just finished Death in Yellowstone: Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First National Park by Lee H. Whittlesey.

Re: What are you reading?
I just finish Josh Aho's book "Climbing Colorado's 14ers with Sawyer". Josh and his golden retriever climbed all of the 14ers except Capitol. Only one (other) dog has climbed all of the 14ers. This book is terrific. It is a tabletop book with tons of awesome pics. For those on this site who climb with dogs, you will be amazed and probably crying at the end. I just finished "The Ghosts of K2" by Mick Conefrey. Lots of good info on the early climbing history of K2.

No Picnic on Mount Kenya by Felice Benuzzi. It's literally a cross between the Great Escape and like, Conquistadors of the Useless. Great book. The world's a lot smaller of a place these days.

The Journey of Crazy Horse by Joseph Marshall.
It's a good read about the great warrior and the Lakota Sioux. Very compelling account of a tragic part of our history.

Re: What are you reading?
Do I get credit for reading if I am listening to an audio book ? If yes, I am "reading" The Hungry Ocean by Linda Greenlaw. Before that I "read" Hiking Through One man’s journey to peace and freedom on the Appalachian Trail by Paul Stutzman, and a few weeks back I finally finished "reading" A Dance with Dragons by George RR Martin.
