Yeah, you run into people like that down there. They think you're absolutely nuts if you're not on an ATV or a horse and wearing jeans. Good entertainment.

Great report! The snow looked quite heavy up there still. I'm looking at a June 7-10 trip for Handies and wondering if snowshoes and/or crampons would be necessary based on your trip. I know the Front Range is still getting hammered with snow (as of this week), what about down there?

Glad you guys enjoyed the entertainment.     05/24/2011 03:18
Pretty funny stuff, I am glad you guys got a laugh out of it.

@MtnHund- Based on everything I know about current conditions on Handies and experiences in the mountains that time of the year in years past, I would definitely bring a mountaineering axe and crampons. You might need them, you might not, but I always carry an axe when I go in the high country till snow is pretty much gone. There is one section on Handies that is steep enough you may want crampons too especially if it is icy. I used them on this climb. I would probably expect that area will still be covered with snow the first week of June. I would atleast bring snowshoes in the car. The trailhead is high and you should be able to look from the parking lot across American Basin and decide then if you want to bring them with you. That is probably a toss up. Be very careful of avalanches. There is a lot of avalanche terrain in that basin and we are gearing up for a really big avalanche cycle if things warm up quickly between now and then. Just my guesses/opinions, take it for what you will. Have fun!
