 California Peak in April

The Sangres are in great shape right now. The very dry winter has left many of the Southern Sangres in great condition for climbing. We did not encounter any other people or see any other cars while we were there, and the road is passable quite a ways into the Huerfano Valley. Lindsey looks ripe for the picking with an early start. Since I did not find any other trip reports for this mountain in the month of April, I'm hoping this report is useful, although the dry conditions this year make it more like a May report!

Very well Done!     2011-04-22 16:23:41
I was just thinking about hiking in this area (Lindsay not California) and your TR gives some great info on conditions. Nice photos and TR. Thanks!

Good deal!     2011-04-22 16:36:48
Glad at least one person found it useful 8) makes it worth the time to put it together! Good luck - the conditions up there are pretty nice, and the road is clear higher than I thought it would be.

I like the way you trick out your photos Matt! Photo 6 in that yellow light on the aspens just begs....come hike this trail!
Great TR and beta on California. I'm going to have to bump that one up on my to-do list.

Thanks man     2011-04-22 21:03:42
Yeah, it really is a nice hike. I am tempted to return in early July sometime because I hear the meadow has amazing wildflowers!

Great trip report and photos!     2011-04-23 10:44:49
California is one of my favorites with some of the best views of the Sangres IMO Amazing how little snow is down there. It definitely looks like May instead of April!

Question     2011-05-05 10:30:05
Matt, nice report and thanks for the info. I and a couple of others are planning to head down there this Saturday (instead of the Spring Gathering). It sounds and looks like you did not use your snowshoes at all. Is that right? Would you have left them behind if you had better info? I'll see if I can find info on any new snow since, but it's sounding like we might be able to do without the snowshoes. Thanks!

Tough question     2011-05-05 20:51:18
CarpeDM, it is a tough one... I think in retrospect, yes, we would have left the shoes in the car, but that is one advantage to the Lightning Ascents - they don't weigh much. I don't know how much snow that area received since then, so that would be worth noting. Thanks for stopping by!
