Mt. Elbert east ridge ascent, box creek couloir ski descent via south elbert TH.
I decided on the east ridge after last months trail breaking/ wayfinding nightmare on the south ridge. The weather was great all daysnow stayed cold above treeline, and I got to ski almost halfway down the 4WD road, about a mile from my car at the 2wd trail
early snow was good and route finding was no problem
first view of Elbert since the TH
near tree line, most of the est ridge on the right
I think this is S. Elbert? it was on the other side of the gultch
the long route above the trees
first view of the box creek!
I ditched my gear around 14k' (not here) at a spot I could easily get back to above the box creek.
closer look at the couloirs
the only post holes where I had to hike were only shin deep. It stayed cold all day thankfully.
the final pitch after a few small false summits
the top of CO
12 year old boots with fresh soles, best $60 ever spent.
looking down into box creek- to ski out, stay high and keep your speed
a look back up from around the start of the steeps
I was able to stay to the left side and skirt all the way around back to the east ridge on the right with no elevation gain
It was steep, but this looks worse than it was
from the end of the box
the headwall. I came down the middle and stayed high on the right side to avoid any more gain on the way back
skiers left has continous snow all the way back around to the east ridge
and the full hike from the 2WD TH
